Hamilton Cams Cummins valve springs are ideal if your truck boosts over 50 lbs, if your engine runs over 3800 RPM, or in combination with a performance camshaft.
The original valve springs generate an average pressure on the valves of 78 to 82 lb at 1.380″.
If you exceed 35 psi (of boost or drive) and 3800 RPM, the stock valve springs fail to control the valves.
This creates two problems in the engine. First, valve float occurs, which can damage the valvetrain.
Secondly, the pressure and boost open the intake and exhaust, allowing exhaust gases to enter the cylinder during intake.
Exhaust gases, when reintroduced into the cylinder, create a barrier between the fuel and oxygen particles.
This leads to two problematic consequences:
- the delay between the start of injection and the start of combustion is longer
- the maximum pressure and temperature reached in the cylinder decrease, increasing the time needed to completely burn the fuel.
That’s why it’s important to have the right valve springs to produce the necessary energy to develop as much horsepower as possible.
